This comprehensive course covers the fundamentals of point-to-point - PtP - microwave link planning and design (7-80GHz), targeting both students and telecom/wireless engineering professionals. To understand today's wireless data transport networks challenges and needs, the course will start by explaining a typical modern mobile network architecture (both Core and Access), underlying key concepts like coverage, latency or capacity, and how such variants impact our wireless data transport networks. Also, student will be introduced to different services (voice, data, PTT, IoT) carried over a private/public mobile network and their underlying Performance Monitoring Indicators. Then the course will dive specifically in the planning and designing of a point-to-point microwave link. First the student will understand how a radio relay works and the phenomena affecting the signal propagation and reception; will be introduced to concepts like: baseband unit, outdoor unit, modem, multiplexer, link budget, availability, multipath propagation, Etc. All explanations will use real world examples and equipment data sheets from well known radio relay vendors like Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Etc. Then the student will learn how to configure and use Map system tools and professional point-to-point link design tools, applying the theoretical accumulated knowledge. Towards the end of the course, the student will plan and design a microwave network from scratch using Google Earth Pro and Pathloss 6, starting from building the nominal plan and choosing the correct equipment (frequency, channel BW, antenna, Etc), to a fully designed links network ready for deployment.

What you will learn?

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Understand modern network architectures (e.g., 5G) and data transport technologies and challenges (e.g. Latency, BER).
  2. Understand radio relay principles, system components and standards (e.g. Fresnel zone, channel spacing, EM signal polarization).
  3. Understand key radio relay parameters/features driving the microwave network design process (e.g. QAM, Antenna Gain, EIRP, Rx Th).
  4. Use Map systems for Lign-of-sight analysis and nominal/final network plan definitions (Google Earth, Pathloss 6).
  5. Use Pathloss 6 link simulator along with understanding key propagation models and methodologies (Ex. ITU-R P.530-6/7).
  6. Perform link design in various frequency Bands (from 7GHz to 80GHz) by targeting predefined capacities (Mbps) and quality objectives.
  7. Understand advanced radio techniques widely used in most networks today (Ex. XPIC, HSB, Space Diversity).
